CLIC During the School Day this week

4th grade Magnetic Forces-Compass Lab

4th grade classes are coming to CLIC to make compasses.  We are learning about magnetic forces of the Earth and also how compasses use the magnetic north and souh poles to show us direction.  The goal is to understand how a compass magically moves due to magnetism.

Children are taught how to make a temporary magnet out of a paperclip.  They are given a bunch of household materials that will act as a vehicle for their magnetised needle.  The compasses are placed in a large  bin of water so that the compass can freely spin as a compass needle would spin.

Children are mesmerized watching how their compasses move to aline with the horth and south magnetic poles.

5th Grade Science-Density Labs

5th graders are coming to CLIC to do labs that take their knowledge of the states of matter as well as density.  We are doing discovery labs with water density first.  This week students learned about how although water can look and ast the same, it can have dramatically different densities.  We learned about how H20 has polar properties making it perfect for for the polar sucrose particles yersbond to.  In other words, sucrose dissolves in water and adds density to the water.

We experimented with different amounts of sugar in each glass dissolved by 50 ml syringes of water.  Students carefully stacked the water densities on top of each other in the beakers.  We learned how to use many units of measurement as well as how to set up each group's lab space.  Students loved the challenge of stacking the different colorful density layers.

It's not too late to sign up for CLIC Classes.

CLIC Before and After school Classes begin the week of October 25th.
These classes will change every 4 weeks.

The following classes will begin next week:

Tuesdays, 8:00-8:45 am- Basket Woven Sculptures Class
Tuesdays, 3:00-4:00 PM - Basket Woven Sculptures Class
Wednesdays, 8:00-8:45 am- Chess Club
Thursdays, 8:00-8:45 am- Mechanical Contraptions Class
Thursdays, 3:00-4:00 PM- Mechanical Contraptions Class

This week in CLIC-5th grade

Mrs. Solomon and Mrs. Cole's class are doing an exciting unit on Harry Potter.  They came to CLIC to make Harry Potter wands. Students learned to shape hot glue into knots and textures to wooden sticks adding leather handles or bat, spiders, skulls, or jewels to their wands.  The wands looked like professional props.

Next week Highlight: 5th grade Science labs in CLIC based on engineering boats with discussion of matter, mass, volume, desity, and bouyancy.
